It's been almost 4 years since the release of the PlayStation 5 and in a surprise move Sony has revealed that the console is getting a major update with a face lift and some internal upgrades. Check out the reveal video below;

What's Different?

The new version of the PlayStation 5 is set to be a lot smaller and compact, Sony have reduced the volume of the console by 30% and the overall weight has been reduced by 18%-24% so the PS5 will now offer a much more streamlined and less bulky appearance, something that was a common complaint with the old design.

The biggest difference though is the new attachable Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive - if you opt to go for the digital edition but change your mind further down the line and decide you want a disc edition then you simply purchase the attachable disc drive and transform your console from digital to disc.

The updated console will also have a 1TB SSD which is slightly higher than the 825GB SSD that came with the original at launch and Sony have also confirmed that players will still be able to expand the hard drive size with an additional SSD.

This new model will be launching in the US from November with the rest of the globe catching up in the following months and eventually when all stock of the original has gone - this will be the new base model of PS5.

Accessories

A huge selling point of the PlayStation 5 was having the ability to customise the appearance by changing out the console covers and it's already been confirmed that covers will also be available for the updated PS5 Slim. There's no exact date that they'll be available but we do know that from early 2024 you will be able to purchase matte black covers along with a selection from their deep earth collection which consists of volcanic red, cobalt blue and sterling silver. Covers for the PS5 Slim will also cost the same as the current covers (£44.99/$54.99/€54.99)

The console will come with a horizontal stand however unlike the original if you want a stand for your console whilst it's vertical then you will need to purchase that separately (£24.99/$29.99/€29.99)
